Wakiso Intensifies Solid Waste Management Campaign.

The District has intensified efforts to improve sanitation and solid waste management, with district leaders adopting measures to curb illegal dumping, strengthen garbage collection and promote waste sorting and recycling.
The resolutions were reached during a consultative meeting chaired by District Chairperson Eng. Ian Kyeyune and attended by Local Council III Chairpersons, Town Clerks, Senior Community Development Assistants and members of the District Executive Committee.
As part of the new measures, the district will establish sanitation committees to work with health inspectors and communities in identifying households that require garbage collection services. Residents will also be engaged through community barazas to agree on service providers and collection fees, while local councils will be encouraged to make budgetary provisions for waste management.
Leaders further resolved to strengthen enforcement against illegal dumping by recruiting scouts to identify offenders and applying the polluter-pays principle. Schools, churches and other institutions will support community sensitisation, while young people will be encouraged to participate in garbage collection, waste sorting and recycling as potential sources of income.
A technical review of Menvu Landfill in Nansana Municipality will also be undertaken to assess how the facility can support waste sorting and recycling, subject to authorisation from the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA).
The district will seek additional garbage trucks from KCCA and ensure that waste collected during National Cleaning Day is cleared within two days to prevent accumulation.
Chairperson Kyeyune urged communities to view garbage not only as a sanitation challenge but also as an economic opportunity, reaffirming his commitment to reviving solid waste management strategies he initiated about 15 years ago.
The resolutions come ahead of National Cleaning Day on Saturday, 29 August 2026, which will be spearheaded by Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja in Kyaliwajjala Ward, Kira Municipality.
District leaders have been urged to fully participate in the exercise and use it to promote lasting community responsibility for proper waste management, cleaner neighbourhoods and healthier communities.
