Government Advances Infrastructure Planning Under GKMA Urban Development Program

The Government, through the Ministry of Kampala Capital City and Metropolitan Affairs, has stepped up preparations for major infrastructure upgrades in Wakiso District and Nansana Municipality under the Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area Urban Development Program (GKMA-UDP).
During a high-level meeting held at the district headquarters, district and municipal officials engaged Infrastructure Cost and Management Consultants to review the inception report for detailed engineering designs, Resettlement Action Plans (RAP), and Environmental and Social Impact Assessments (ESIA).
The discussions focused on key road and drainage projects earmarked for development. These include Luteete–Buwate (3.3 km), Nangabo–Luteete–Komamboga (5.6 km), Nangabo–Bamba (1.6 km), Kasangati–Kyankima (1.7 km), Bujuuko–Kigoma–Nakabugo (5 km), Kiti Buwambo–Namulonge (14.3 km), Naluuma–Kageye–Kagoma (6.8 km), and Kasolo–Kamponye (2.8 km). Drainage improvements will cover the Jalaja system and Kajjansi crossing.
The meeting provided an opportunity to present findings, address technical considerations, and agree on key adjustments to ensure smooth progress of both preliminary and detailed design phases. Technical teams from the District and Nansana Municipality actively contributed to the process.
The consultancy, running from April to October 2026, will cover a total of 44.6 km of infrastructure, including 38.3 km of roads and 6.3 km of drainage systems.
Once completed, the project is expected to significantly improve mobility, enhance drainage, and strengthen service delivery across the Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area.
The program is funded by the World Bank and Agence Française de Développement (AFD), with the consultancy team led by Director Henry Mukiibi of ICM Consultants.
