Minister Kyofatogabye Hands Over Site for Construction of Wakiso Central Daily Market.

The State Minister for Kampala Capital City and Metropolitan Affairs, Hon. Joseph Kabuye Kyofatogabye, has officially handed over the site for the construction of the Wakiso Central Daily Market, paving the way for a major investment aimed at strengthening trade infrastructure and stimulating local economic growth in the district.
The market, which will be constructed under the Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area Urban Development Programme (GKMA-UDP), will be implemented by Techno Three Uganda Limited at a cost of UGX 20.3 billion. The modern facility is expected to be completed within 12 months and will accommodate approximately 800 vendors.
Speaking during the handover ceremony, Hon. Kyofatogabye emphasized the importance of timely project implementation, adherence to quality standards, and the improvement of access roads serving the market. He also urged traders and residents to maintain high standards of hygiene and encouraged vendors to establish stronger linkages with farmers across Wakiso District to enhance agricultural trade and market supply.
Wakiso District Chief Administrative Officer, Mr. Jude Mark Bukenya, commended the Government of Uganda, H.E. President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, and development partners for supporting the project. He stressed that the market is intended to benefit genuine vendors and cautioned district staff against acquiring market stalls, pledging strict enforcement to ensure transparency and fairness in allocation.
The Undersecretary for Kampala Metropolitan Affairs, Ms. Monicah Edemachu, called upon local leaders to intensify community sensitization efforts and support effective project implementation. She underscored the importance of accountability and timely completion of government-funded projects to ensure value for money and sustain future development investments.
Wakiso District Chairperson, Eng. Ian Kyeyune, described the commencement of construction as a significant milestone following years of planning and stakeholder engagement. He reaffirmed the district’s commitment to closely monitoring project implementation and ensuring transparency throughout the construction period. He noted that the market would create employment opportunities, boost household incomes, and contribute to the district’s economic transformation.
According to District Engineer Lillian Namutebi Jagwe, the market will feature modern trading facilities, including stalls, lockups, a skilling centre, restaurant facilities, sanitation amenities, parking space, garbage management systems, office accommodation, and banking services. Environmental and social safeguards will be overseen by UB Consulting Engineers Limited.
Representatives of Techno Three Uganda Limited pledged to prioritize local employment opportunities during construction and assured stakeholders of their commitment to delivering quality work within the stipulated timeframe and in accordance with all required standards.
Upon completion, the Wakiso Central Daily Market is expected to become a key commercial hub within the district, providing improved trading space for vendors, enhancing service delivery, and creating new opportunities for businesses and entrepreneurs. :::
