Headteachers have Undergone Pre-Retirement Training
A total of 160 headteachers from primary schools across the district have undergone a two-day pre-retirement training aimed at equipping them with practical knowledge and skills in pension processing, financial management, and life after active service.
Speaking during the workshop, Wakiso Deputy Chief Administrative Officer, Godfrey Kiiza Rwakijuma, urged teachers to start planning for retirement early, maintain financial discipline, manage their estates responsibly, and avoid extravagant lifestyles.
He emphasized that retirement preparation should begin immediately after securing government employment, noting that early planning enables public servants to transition smoothly into retirement.
Senior Human Resource Officer Katamba Mathias sensitized participants on the Pension Act and retirement procedures, stressing the importance of proper documentation and timely processing of retirement benefits.
The participating headteachers were drawn from several town councils and sub-counties, including Kyengera, Kajjansi, Katabi, Kakiri, Namayumba, and Bussi.
During the training, officials highlighted key challenges that often delay gratuity and pension payments, including missing appointment letters, inconsistencies in personal records, and delayed submission of required documents.
Participants were further encouraged to invest wisely, join SACCOs, acquire additional income-generating skills, and avoid excessive borrowing to secure stable livelihoods after retirement.
The training also covered social adjustment, physical and mental well-being, estate management, and the importance of writing wills in line with Uganda’s Succession Act.
Officials additionally outlined the different categories of retirement, including mandatory retirement, early retirement, medical retirement, and retirement in the public interest.
The headteachers are expected to share the knowledge acquired during the workshop with fellow teachers in their respective schools.
