Rotary Clubs of Kasangati and Bulindo Launch Construction of Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Kasangati Health Center IV

The Rotary Clubs of Kasangati and Bulindo have partnered to construct a fully equipped Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Kasangati Health Center IV in Wakiso District. The UGX 160 million project will include UGX 70 million for construction, UGX 60 million for specialized neonatal equipment, and UGX 30 million for training health workers to manage critical newborn cases.

Rotary Club Bulindo President, Lubega Percy Paul, highlighted that the project seeks to save newborns suffering from respiratory and other neonatal complications—many of whom lose their lives during referrals to Kawempe National Hospital due to the absence of specialized care at Kasangati HC IV.

Rotary Club Kasangati President, Kisitu Andrew, reaffirmed Rotary’s commitment to bridging service delivery gaps and supporting sustainable community health solutions.

The project construction was officially launched by Wakiso District Assistant Chief Administrative Officer, John Lutalo, who was accompanied by district health officials. He commended Rotary’s intervention and pledged full district cooperation during the implementation process.

According to the In-Charge of Kasangati Health Center IV, Akugisibwe Roseline, the facility handles over 300 deliveries monthly but loses up to 40 newborns due to neonatal complications. She expressed optimism that the upcoming NICU will drastically reduce these preventable deaths and strengthen maternal and child health outcomes in the region.

Wakiso District Advances Key GKMA-UDP Projects as Council Reaffirms Commitment to Good Governance

Wakiso District continues to demonstrate strong leadership and development momentum following the approval of the First Quarter Status Report for the Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area Urban Development Programme (GKMA-UDP) for FY 2025/26. The report was endorsed by the District Local Council chaired by Speaker Najja Nasiifu, highlighting significant progress in infrastructure projects that are set to transform connectivity and service delivery across the district.

The flagship 22.17 km Bukasa–Sentema–Kakiri road, valued at 56.128 billion shillings, has registered 16% physical progress since construction began on 2 May 2025. This upgrade is expected to greatly improve transport efficiency, support economic growth, and enhance access to social services for communities along the corridor.

In addition, the 6.5 km Kitemu–Kisozi–Naggalabi Spur road, worth 35.265 billion shillings, has achieved 18% progress by the end of the first quarter. The project is another key investment aimed at improving mobility and stimulating local development.

While the report acknowledges challenges such as delayed fund releases and stakeholder concerns, the District Council remains confident that ongoing engagement and strengthened coordination will help address these issues and keep the projects on track.

Demonstrating its commitment to transparency and institutional integrity, the Council also resolved to extend the process of approving members for the new District Service Commission. This will allow additional time for thorough scrutiny ahead of the expiry of the current Commission’s term in December 2025.

The district’s continued progress under GKMA-UDP reflects Wakiso’s broader vision of delivering modern infrastructure, promoting accountability, and fostering inclusive growth for all residents.
