The district has Launched a Pilot School Waste Management Campaign to Promote Environmental Stewardship
The district has launched a pilot waste management campaign that will see 320 waste bins distributed to 100 primary schools as part of efforts to promote waste segregation at source and nurture a culture of environmental responsibility among young learners.
The initiative, funded under the Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area Urban Development Programme (GKMA-UDP), is designed to equip schools with practical waste management tools while empowering pupils to become ambassadors of environmental conservation within their homes and communities.
Speaking at the launch, district Chairperson, Eng. Ian Kyeyune Sengonzi, said the campaign is intended to instil lifelong waste management habits among learners, noting that children play a critical role in influencing positive behaviour change in society.
He emphasized that promoting proper waste segregation at an early age will contribute to cleaner communities and support the district’s long-term environmental sustainability goals.
Eng. Kyeyune also called for increased investment in modern waste management infrastructure, including the establishment of a central waste collection facility and a solid waste processing plant, to enhance recycling, value addition, and sustainable waste management across the district.
He commended private sector partners Home clean, Yola, and Prime Garbage Collectors for complementing government efforts to improve environmental management and public sanitation.
District Natural Resources Officer Rebecca Sabaganzi explained that schools were deliberately selected for the pilot because children are effective agents of behavioural change. She noted that proper waste segregation reduces the volume of waste sent to landfills, promotes recycling and resource recovery, and supports the transition to a circular economy.
The campaign aligns with the Wakiso District State of the Environment Report 2025, the Waste Management Strategy 2025, and the District Environment Action Plan, reinforcing the district’s commitment to sustainable environmental management and improved public health.
