The District Commemorates International Candlelight Memorial Service

On 19th/May/2026 the district joined the global community in commemorating the International Candlelight Memorial Service at the District Headquarters, bringing together key stakeholders in the fight against HIV/AIDS.
The event attracted representatives from NGOs, the District AIDS Committee, groups of People Living with HIV/AIDS, development partners, the Infectious Diseases Institute, health workers, as well as religious and cultural leaders.
Held annually across the world, the memorial service honours the memory of those who lost their lives to HIV/AIDS, celebrates survivors, and renews collective commitment towards ending the epidemic.
The commemoration was supported by AFROCAB in partnership with National Forum of People Living with HIV/AIDS Networks in Uganda (NAFOPHANU).
During the event, stakeholders reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening HIV/AIDS service delivery in Wakiso District through expanded HIV testing, improved access to treatment, increased availability of injectable preventive drugs, and sustained community support initiatives.
According to the District HIV/AIDS Focal Person, Juliet Nasuna, the District recorded 9,505 new HIV infections during the 2024/2025 financial year.
She revealed that 3,222 of the new infections were among females, while 896 were recorded among males. In addition, 79 children were born with HIV, of whom 77 have since been enrolled on treatment. The district also recorded 617 HIV cases among adolescents aged between 10 and 19 years.
Nasuna called for strengthened prevention efforts, early testing, and sustained community awareness to help curb new infections and improve the quality of life for people living with HIV/AIDS.
The memorial service ended with a renewed call for unity, compassion, and collective action in the continued fight against HIV/AIDS in the District and Uganda at large.
