Wakiso District on the 17th of April 2024, commemorated the International Women’s Day 2024 at Entebbe Works ground in Entebbe Municipality.
The day was celebrated under the theme “Accelerating Gender Equality through Women’s Economic Empowerment”.
Officiating at the celebrations, the National Treasurer NRM Party Barbra Nekesa Oundo said the girl child is no longer regarded as only suitable for marriage.
Oundo added that more efforts are needed to ensure that we eliminate all factors that frustrate the girl child education.
The National mobiliser for NRM party Rose Mary Nansubuga Seninde appreciated the women empowerment which has enabled 80% of women looked after homes and appealed to mothers to restrain their daughters from accessing wrong information on social media.
Seninde called upon Wakiso residents to vote for NRM come 2026.
The Resident District Commissioner Wakiso, Justine Mbabazi, called upon women to embrace the Parish Development Model since it is aimed at uplifting their living standards.
The Chairperson Wakiso District Women’s council Sherry Karyebara commended Central Government for introducing UWEP program which has improved women household incomes in the country.
The colorful event was characterized by a parade, exhibitions and a health camp among others activities.

Wakiso District Health midterm performance review meeting at Kavumba recreation centre in Wakiso Towncouncil.
The objectives of the meeting is to review the District general performance from July to December 2023 , identify key challenges in health service delivery and propose a way foward for the improvement of health service delivery in Wakiso District.
The meeting is attended by Incharges of Health facilities,development partners like Save the Children,Infectious Disease Institute and USAID among others.
The Chief Administrative Officer Alfred Malinga while officiating at the meeting said there is an improvement in the delivery of health services in the District.
He commended development partners for their support towards improving health service delivery in the district.

The Executive Director Uganda Bereau of Statistics Chris Mukiza today held a stakeholders engagement meeting with Wakiso District leadership concerning the on going mapping and household listing exercise expected to be completed by 31 March 2024.
He said it is important to put a lot of emphasis on mapping exercise in order to have a successful census.
He says Wakiso was handled last since its a unique District with the highest population in the country.
He says the census night will be carried out on 9th May and actual census will kick off on 10th May 2024 for a period of 10 days with preliminary results to be released by end of June 2024.
The District Chairperson Dr. Matia Lwanga Bwanika promised to give the necessary support and commitment to the census exercise due to its importance in planning and governance.
The Resident District Commissioner Justine Mbabazi emphasized the need for team work and public awareness for a successful exercise.
The Deputy Chief Administrative Officer Betty Nankindu said the District will use the census structures which were created. She promised to bridge the gaps that have been hindering the exercise to move on smoothly.

The Minister for Local Government has today handed over 27 brand new motorcycles to Subcounty, Town council and Division Chairpersons in Wakiso District to help them in monitoring government programs and mobilization of the masses.
The Minister who was represented by the Permanent Secretary Ministry of Local Government Benjamin Kumumanya called upon the chairpersons to use the motorcycles for their intended use.
Kumumanya promised the local government leaders that the ministry will work on issues affecting Wakiso District due its unique nature.
The Woman Member of Parliament Betty Ethel Naluyima reminded the Minister to work on the issue of late releases of funds which are collected by the Lower Local Governments adding that this has crippled service delivery in most local governments.
She also appealed to the ministry to sort out the issues of boundaries since KCCA is always encroaching Wakiso areas of Bulenga and Najjera in Kira Municipality.
The District Chairperson Dr. Matia Lwanga Bwanika appealed to the Minister to consider Wakiso as a National District which should be uniquely considered but disregard its voting pattern.
The Chief Administrative Officer Alfred Malinga expressed gratitude to government for providing transport means to chairpersons.
He said they chairpersons should set up efforts in monitoring government programs like Parish Developing model, Emyooga, Education, health and microscale irrigation among others.
