Department’s Mandate
- To deliver health care services by the Department of Health is vested in the constitution of the Republic of Uganda and the Local Government Act cap 243 (1997) schedule 2 which outlines the responsibilities of Local Governments and ownership of hospitals, Health Centre IVs, Health Centre IIIs, Health Centre IIs and Village Health Teams (VHTs) as guided by the Health Sector Strategic Plan (HSSP) III amongst others.
The Health Department is committed to promoting and protecting the health and well-being of all residents across the District.
Strategic Direction
Enhance health service delivery, reduce disease burden, and improve health infrastructure to support a healthy population.
Core Functions
- Develop district health plans and annual budgets.
- Mobilize financial, human, and material resources for health service delivery.
- Provide technical oversight and support supervision to health facilities, including HC IVs, HC IIIs, HC IIs, PNFP and PFP facilities.
- Support and coordinate the performance of Village Health Teams (VHTs).
- Carry out regular facility performance assessments through annual health assemblies and Quarterly performance reviews.
- Identify staffing needs, support training, mentorship, and deployments.
- Oversee maintenance of the health infrastructure and equipment in facilities.
- Support disease surveillance, outbreak response, WASH interventions, and disaster preparedness.
- Engage with MoH, NGOs, partners, and District oversight bodies for service delivery and resource mobilization.
