Department’s Mandate
- To promote sustainable economic growth and improve household incomes by supporting the development of local enterprises, trade, value addition, cooperatives, and industrialization. The department guides the formulation and implementation of policies, strategies, and programs that stimulate inclusive economic participation and competitiveness at the district level.
Strategic Direction
- To position Wakiso District as a competitive and vibrant local economy through the promotion of entrepreneurship, industrial development, private sector investment, and market access. This is achieved by empowering small and medium enterprises (SMEs), strengthening local value chains, supporting cooperative movements, and creating enabling infrastructure for trade and industry.
The department aims to align its efforts with the Uganda Vision 2040, NDP III, and the National Local Economic Development Policy to improve livelihoods and foster inclusive growth.
Core Functions
- Promotion of Local Economic Development (LED): Facilitate local economic initiatives, partnerships, and innovation that create employment and improve incomes.
- Support to Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs): Provide business advisory services, training, and linkages to credit and markets.
- Trade Development and Regulation: Register businesses, regulate trade practices, and support the development of local markets and trade infrastructure.
- Promotion of Industrialization: Identify and promote investment in industrial zones, agro-processing, and value addition activities.
- Support to Cooperatives and Producer Groups: Register, monitor, and build the capacity of cooperatives and community-based producer organizations.
- Market Infrastructure Development: Plan and coordinate the construction, rehabilitation, and management of local markets and industrial parks.
- Policy Development and Coordination: Guide and coordinate implementation of trade, industry, and LED-related policies and by-laws.
- Business Information and Data Management: Collect and disseminate trade, industry, and enterprise-related data to support planning and investment promotion.
- Stakeholder Engagement: Collaborate with private sector actors, NGOs, and development partners to promote economic initiatives.
- Resource Mobilization: Attract investment and mobilize resources to support LED programs and infrastructure development.
