Sector Mandate
- To protect and promote animal health and welfare, safeguard public health through control of zoonotic diseases, ensure quality animal products for consumption and trade, and support livestock productivity for improved livelihoods and food security.
Core Functions
- Disease Surveillance, Prevention & Control: Monitor, diagnose, and manage animal diseases, including zoonoses, to prevent outbreaks and ensure public safety.
- Animal Health Services: Provide veterinary care, vaccination, and treatment services to improve animal productivity and welfare.
- Livestock Identification & Movement Control: Regulate livestock movements and enforce disease control protocols such as quarantines and permits.
- Veterinary Public Health: Inspect slaughter facilities and monitor meat, milk, and other animal products to ensure hygiene and safety for human consumption.
- Extension Services: Train and advise farmers on animal husbandry, disease prevention, and good livestock management practices.
- Veterinary Laboratory Services: Support diagnosis and research through local laboratory services for rapid disease detection and response.
- Promotion of Animal Welfare: Enforce regulations related to humane handling, transport, and care of animals.
- Certification & Trade Facilitation: Certify animals and animal products for local, regional, and international markets.
