PRINCIPAL FISHERIES OFFICER (PFO)
Sector’s Mandate
- To ensure the sustainable management, conservation, development, and utilization of fishery resources in both natural and artificial water bodies. It aims to enhance fish production, food security, and household incomes while conserving aquatic ecosystems.
Core Functions
- Fisheries Resource Management: Regulate and monitor fishing activities to prevent overfishing and promote sustainable use of aquatic resources.
- Licensing and Compliance Enforcement: Issue licenses to fishers and enforce fisheries laws and regulations to curb illegal fishing practices.
- Aquaculture Development: Promote fish farming (ponds, cages, tanks) as a means of increasing fish production and diversifying livelihoods.
- Fisheries Extension Services: Provide technical guidance and training to fishers and aquaculture farmers on best practices.
- Conservation of Aquatic Ecosystems: Collaborate with environmental stakeholders to protect wetlands, breeding areas, and water quality.
- Data Collection and Research: Collect data on fish stocks, fishing trends, and aquaculture to guide planning and policy development.
- Community Engagement: Support the formation and capacity-building of Beach Management Units (BMUs) and other community-based resource user groups.
- Market Access and Value Addition: Facilitate fish processing, packaging, and market linkage initiatives to increase income for fisheries actors.
