Department’s Mandate
- Planning, coordinating and overseeing agricultural and production activities in the district these include promoting agricultural technologies, pests and diseases surveillance and control, regulation and guidance of agro input dealers, promotion of farmer organizations, promotion of pest –harvest management technologies.
- Establishing and operationalizing collaboration mechanisms with the meteorological department and national, regional and international food and agricultural surveillance institutions and organizations for early warning on climate.
Core Functions
- Agricultural Development Support: Promote modern and sustainable farming practices through extension services, training, and access to inputs and technologies.
- Livestock Health and Veterinary Services: Provide disease control, animal health services, and livestock improvement programs.
- Fisheries Management: Support sustainable exploitation, conservation, and value addition in the fisheries sub-sector.
- Agro-Processing and Value Addition: Promote agro-industrialization by supporting value addition, product development, and market linkages.
- Farmer Mobilization and Capacity Building: Organize and train farmer groups, cooperatives, and agribusinesses to enhance productivity and competitiveness.
- Market Development and Regulation: Facilitate the development of structured markets, ensure standards, and regulate trade in agricultural products.
- Coordination of Government Agricultural Programs: Implement and monitor national agricultural programs like the Parish Development Model, NAADS, and Operation Wealth Creation (OWC).
- Promotion of Agricultural Financing and Insurance: Advocate for financial inclusion, access to agricultural credit, and insurance services for farmers.
- Agricultural Statistics and Planning: Collect, analyze, and use agricultural data to guide planning, budgeting, and decision-making.
