Sector’s Mandate
- To ensure the sustainable management, protection, and wise use of wetlands in Wakiso District. This includes conserving wetland ecosystems, regulating activities within and around wetlands, restoring degraded wetlands, and promoting their vital role in biodiversity conservation, water regulation, and climate resilience.
Core Functions
- Wetland Inventory and Mapping: Conduct and update inventories and maps of all wetlands in the district to guide planning and decision-making.
- Conservation and Restoration: Protect wetlands from degradation and implement restoration programs for encroached or polluted wetlands.
- Regulatory Enforcement: Monitor and enforce compliance with national and district-level wetland regulations, including permitting for activities in wetland zones.
- Environmental Impact Assessments: Participate in the review and approval of Environmental and Social Impact Assessments (ESIAs) for proposed projects that may affect wetlands.
- Community Awareness and Education: Sensitize local communities on the importance of wetlands and engage them in sustainable wetland use and conservation.
- Climate Regulation and Flood Control: Promote the role of wetlands in natural flood management, water purification, and climate change mitigation.
- Biodiversity Conservation: Support the protection of wetland habitats that are home to various plant and animal species, including migratory birds and endangered wildlife.
- Stakeholder Coordination: Collaborate with government agencies, NGOs, research institutions, and the private sector on wetland conservation initiatives.
- Support for Sustainable Livelihoods: Promote alternative and sustainable livelihood options that reduce pressure on wetlands (e.g., fish farming, beekeeping, and eco-tourism).
