Sector’s Mandate
- To promote sustainable forest management and conservation by regulating forest activities, supporting afforestation programs, and ensuring the protection of forest ecosystems for environmental sustainability and community benefit.
Core Functions
- Forest Resource Management: Oversee the conservation, protection, and sustainable utilization of forests and woodlands within the district.
- Afforestation and Reforestation Initiatives: Promote tree planting and reforestation activities on public, private, and institutional lands to increase forest cover and combat deforestation.
- Monitoring and Regulation of Forest Use: Enforce forestry laws and regulations related to timber harvesting, charcoal burning, and land use to prevent illegal activities and degradation.
- Community Forestry Development: Support and facilitate community-based forestry programs that empower local residents to manage and benefit from forest resources.
- Forest Resource Inventory and Mapping: Maintain an updated inventory and geographic information system (GIS) data on forest resources for planning and monitoring purposes.
- Agroforestry Promotion: Promote the integration of trees into farming systems to improve soil fertility, provide shade, and enhance food security.
- Capacity Building and Extension Services: Provide technical support, education, and training to farmers, institutions, and stakeholders on best forestry practices and forest conservation.
- Forest Restoration and Degraded Land Rehabilitation: Implement programs to restore degraded forest areas and enhance biodiversity conservation.
- Collaboration and Partnership Development: Work in partnership with NGOs, development partners, and other government agencies to support sustainable forestry initiatives.
- Climate Change Mitigation: Promote the role of forests in carbon sequestration and climate change mitigation through tree-planting campaigns and ecosystem preservation.
