A study carried out by the school of Public Health Makerere University about the prevalence of metabolic syndrome and associated risk factors among females of reproductive age between 15- 49 years in Wakiso revealed that 5.3 percent of women were overweight
While 11.9 percent of women were obese in the District are at risk of acquiring metabolic syndrome and associated risk factors.
Dr David Lubogo a senior Lecturer from the school of public Health Makerere university revealed this during a dissemination work shop of District stakeholders on a study about the prevalence of metabolic syndrome and associated risk factors among females of reproductive age in wakiso.
The study was carried out in Mende and Wakiso sub-counties. He added that physical inactivity, dietary diversity, alcohol consumption and smoking were highly ranked among other causes.
The study recommends that management and control of the metabolic syndrome through health education and promotion of behavioral change, weight loss management and promotion of intake of diversified diet among others. Metabolic syndrome is a combination of risk factors of type 2 Diabetes and cardiovascular disease.
Wakiso HCIV has receives a consignment of midwife kits worth 10m from Uganda Nurses and midwives union.
The kits which are used by expectant mothers were lobbied by the Woman Member of Parliament Betty Ethyl Naluyima.
The President Uganda Nurses and Midwives union Justus Cherop handed over the kits to the District Leadership led by the District Chairperson at Wakiso HCIV.
