You should not grow cat fish for the sake of attaching big sizes and weight but rather in respect of what the market wants. Consumers will be reluctant to buy a fish of 4kgs when his family is of three/ four people. As well farmers must learn to engage into value addition (fish smoking) but only small fish size is able to be smoked.
Ponds are captivity rearing areas and Tilapia requires high levels of oxygen and extremely clean environment, therefore they should not expect the big sizes though such size can be achieved but after longer periods.
They are advised to ensure proper management, and to sell fish at an acceptable size other than waiting for the big sizes. They should sell and stock and sell whenever fish attains table size. Waiting for the very big size is not cost effective for someone who is after profits.
Fish mongers with big cargo have more resources and are able to disguise themselves other than the small traders who use public means.
They are further advised that even those ferrying small quantities end up having cumulative big quantities. Big traders with big monies are able to diversify into any other business provided the fish is no more
Illegal nets are normally smuggled into the country and cannot be detected at the designated entry points. Most nets enter from Tanzania by water and the fishers get them because there is no definite border within the fishing area of Lake Victoria that prevents our fishers from interfacing with the Tanzanians.
They are further told to guard against the resource as they are the primary beneficially and are more likely to suffer in case of collapse of the fisheries stocks
